A child spends most of their waking day either in an academic setting or doing homework afterwards. Psycho-educational evaluations are designed to assess how a child is functioning, identifying both their strengths and whatever weakness they have that might be negatively affecting their ability to perform in school. For children having problems in school, it can be very frustrating at best, and result in a child with learning disabilities, poor self esteem, behavior problems, anxiety and even depression.
For some, this may mean that work is not sufficiently challenging. If a child is not receiving a sufficient amount of intellectual stimulation, they get bored and may act out. Such a child might need an educationally enhanced or Gifted Program.
For some children, keeping up academically may prove challenging. A child may present with difficulties as early as pre-school. Evaluation at this point can serve to help direct parents and teachers to providing a child with support services necessary to ensure that the child is able to
keep up with the development of readiness and fundamental skills. For example, are they demonstrating age appropriate motor skills? Are they grasping the idea of letters as symbols or numbers as representing quantity? Evaluation can help clarify a child's strengths and weaknesses early on.
For older children, difficulties may not present significantly until a child's academic demands have increased. Here evaluation is needed to help understand how the child is processing information including reading, reading comprehension, and following teacher lectures. We look at how a child is demonstrating executive function skills such as organizing their materials, following a sequence of instructions and how much effort is needed to accomplish the goals.
The results are shared in detail with parents and supportive consultation is available to aid the school and parents in helping each child to demonstrate sound improvements.
Helping each child down a smoother path to being the best they can be.
